Appendix C
Frequent Errors
  1. Abstract exceeds 350 words.
  2. Spelling errors.
  3. Errors in page numbering
    • All pages must be numbered, except the blank or copyright page, which is counted but not numbered.
    • The abstract shown in Appendix B is not bound with the dissertation and therefore should be numbered independently of the dissertation. The first page is not numbered but any subsequent pages are printed with the page number in the top right hand comer of the page.
    • Page numbers appear in the top right hand comer of each page, except for the first page of any chapter or major section and the preliminary pages.
    • All pages are numbered using Arabic numerals except the preliminary pages, which use Roman numerals.
    • The pages of the manuscript should be in correct numerical order. Charges for rebinding due to misnumbered or out-of-order pages will be billed to the student.
    • References in the bibliography must be single-spaced, with a double space between entries. (this is a specific Graduate School requirement which overrides the requirements of the chosen style guide)
  4. Errors in table of contents and list of figures, tables, etc., such as titles that do not match exactly with headings used in manuscript or incorrectly indicated subdivisions. The title of every chapter must correspond with the table of contents.
  5. Errors in text references:
    • All text references must be listed in the references section at the end of the manuscript.
    • Names and dates appearing in text must exactly match those in the reference section.
    • When a publication has multiple authors, all authors must be cited on first reference, after which et al. must be used.
  6. Margin errors. The left margin must be at least one and a half inches wide to allow for binding, while all other margins are one inch wide (except on signed abstract, which is not bound with abstract and where all margins are one inch).
  7. Signatures that are not original. No photocopies or other reproductions of signatures are permitted.
