THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA GRADUATE SCHOOL
Meet Our Graduate Students

What sets The University of Alabama apart from other universities is its faculty, staff, and administrators. These individuals are incredibly caring and involved, and not just when it comes to grades and academic progress. They are also interested in the personal growth of students and the life of graduate students outside of the classroom by supporting graduate student organizations such as the African American Graduate Student Association and individual endeavors that encourage personal growth…Why go to a school that boasts a big name, but won’t give you the support you need to actually get a degree, when UA has both a great reputation and a great support system?

Sondra Collins, PhD student in Economics

I believe Tuscaloosa’s hometown feel combined with the UA graduate school’s academic excellence creates the ideal setting for professional and personal success. I am pursuing my PhD in chemical engineering and funded through the University’s MINT center researching magnetic recording technology for advanced information storage. The hands-on training along with knowledgeable and caring faculty is enabling me to achieve my goals beyond graduation. Roll Tide!

Michael Ivie, PhD student in Chemical Engineering

I moved from New York to Tuscaloosa to pursue a PhD in educational psychology at The University of Alabama. The welcome that I received from the Graduate School, my department, and the town in general really sets it apart from other universities. Not only has The University of Alabama fulfilled my professional goals in preparing me for a job in academia, but the relationships that I have developed with faculty and administrators through the Graduate School Association and my assistantship have given me research collaborations and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Ashley Carroll, PhD student in Educational Psychology

My ultimate goal is to become a biomedical researcher, and in The University of Alabama’s PhD program in cell and molecular biology I am gaining an exceptional educational experience. In particular, I benefit from training by stellar faculty-who emphasize the value of creativity and hard work- and interaction with a highly talented student community. To be successful in biomedical research, it is important to be at the cutting edge of life science research, and the graduate program at The University of Alabama provides me with this opportunity.
