UA ANNOUNCES GRADUATE COUNCIL FELLOWSHIP AWARDS FOR 2003-2004 The University of Alabama Graduate School announces the recipients of the 2003-2004 Graduate Council Fellowships. Graduate Council Fellowships are the most prestigious and competitive graduate fellowships at the University and are awarded to graduate students with the highest academic and scholarly qualifications. Recipients are selected by the UA Graduate Council, which consists of faculty members from each college of the University. The fellowship pays for tuition and fees, plus an annual stipend.
David Lavoe Arrington of Laurel, Mississippi has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Arrington is in the doctoral degree program in
Chemistry. Arrington received his
bachelor’s degree in Chemisty from the University of Southern Mississippi in
1997. Joshua Scott Banrichter of Cincinnati, Ohio has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowshipto The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Banrichter is in the master's degree program in
Mechanical Engineering. Banrichter
received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University
of Cincinnati in 2003. Banrichter
was a magna cum laude graduate. James Bassett of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Bassett is in the master's degree program in English.
Bassett received his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Anthropology
from UA in 1997. Stephen Paul Benton of Dothan, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Benton
received his bachelor’s degree in 2000 at UA in Biology and his master’s
from UA in Journalism in 2002. Dia Nicole Brannen of Conyers, Georgia has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Brannen is in the doctoral degree program in
Psychology. Brannen received her
bachelor’s degree in 1998 at the University of Georgia in Psychology and her
master’s from UA in Psychology in 2003. Gerrit R. Bulman of Meadville, Pennsylvania has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Bulman is in the master's degree program in Geological
Sciences. Bulman received his
bachelor’s degree in Geology from Brown University in 2000.
Bulman is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Jamiaca). SongSong Cao of China has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Cao is in the doctoral degree program in Biology.
Cao received her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Hanjing
University - China in 2000. Cyleste Cassandra Collins of Arcata, California has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Collins is in the doctoral degree program in Social
Work. Collins received her
bachelor’s degree in 1995 at the University of California at River Side in
Psychology and her master’s from University of California at Santa Barbara in
Psychology in 1999. Karen Joyce Cook of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Cook is in the doctoral degree program in Mass
Communication. Cook received her
bachelor’s degree in 1975 at the University of Colorado in Psychology, Juris
Doctor from University of Texas
School of Law in 1979 and in 1992 her master’s in Library and Information
Studies from Indiana University. Cook
is a member of the Kappa Tau Alpha and Beta Phi Mu; director of LITA and ALA/ERT. Benjamin John Cortopassi of Birmingham, Alabama has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Cortopassi is in the master's degree program in
Finance. Cortopassi received his
bachelor’s degree in Economics from Washington University - St. Louis in 2003.
Cortopassi was a cum laude graduate from Washington University and
obtained the Dean's Honorary Scholarship at Washington University. Kim H. Cross of Fort Walton Beach, Florida has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Cross is in the master's degree program in Journalism.
Cross received her bachelor’s degree in Communication from UA in 1998.
Cross received the Ayers Scholar, was a summa cum laude graduate and is a
National Champion Water-skier. Ashley A. Dumas of Mobile, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Dumas is in the doctoral degree program in
Anthropology. Dumas received her
bachelor’s degree in 1996 at the University of South Alabama in Anthropology
and French and her master’s from UA in Anthropology in 2001.
Dumas received The College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Research by
a Master's Student Award 2001; 1996 Outstanding French Undergraduate Student
Award, Graduate Student Research and Travel Support from UA; Dumas was winner of
the Southeastern Archaelogical Conference Student Paper Competition 2001 and in
2003, and received an
Archaeological Resources Management Grant from the Alabama Cultural Resources
Preservation Trust Fund. Rachel Blake Fry of Birmingham, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Fry is in the doctoral degree program in Psychology.
Fry received her bachelor’s degree in 1997 at the Samford University in
Psychology and her master’s from UA in Psychology in 2002. Junjie Gao of China has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Gao is in the doctoral degree program in Chemistry.
Gao received her bachelor’s degree in 1997 and her master’s in 2002
from the East China Unversity of Science and Technology in Biochemistry. Sara Mayfield Glassman of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Glassman is in the master's degree program in
Anthropology. Glassman received her
bachelor’s degree in Russian Literature and Culture from Mount Holyoke College
in 2001. Michael Paul Griffin of Hartford, Conneticut has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Griffin is in the doctoral degree program in
Psychology. Griffin received his
bachelor’s degree in 1999 at the Loyola College in Maryland in Psychology and
his master’s from the College of William and Mary in Psychology in 2001. John William Hataway of Jasper, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Hataway is in the master's degree program in English.
Hataway received his bachelor’s degree in English from UA in 2003. Stefanie Nicole Hayner of Ashland, Kentucky has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Hayner is in the master's degree program in English.
Hayner received her bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown
College in 2002. Pamela Anne Johnson of Waynesboro, Georgia has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Johnson is in the master's degree program in
Anthropology. Johnson received her
bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Georgia in 2001.
Johnson graduated as a First Honor Graduate, summa cum laude with highest
honors in Education (by Thesis) and as Distinguished Anthropology major in 2001.
She will go on to specialize in prehistoric archaeology in the Southeast. Annah Marshall Joseph of Jackson, Mississippi has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Joseph is in the master's degree program in Social
Work. Joseph received her
bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Spanish from Millsaps College in 2001. Thomas Brian Kennedy of El Cerrito, California has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Kennedy is in the doctoral degree program in
Biology. Kennedy received his
bachelor’s degree in 1990 at the University of California - Davis in Biology
and his master’s from the University of Nevada
at Reno in Biology in 1995. Kennedy
received a Certificate of Merit-U.S. Forest Service 1999; Cultural Immersion
Award-US Peace Corps 1996; On-The-Spot Award-US Fish and Wildlife Service.
He also received a Research Grant-Graudate School - Reno 1992 and
completed service with U. S. Peace Corps-Cameroon, West Africa - Aquaculture. Tribhuwan Prakash Kharkwal of India has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowshipto The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Kharkwal is in the doctoral degree program in
Management Science. Kharkwal
received his bachelor’s degree in 1996 at the G. B.Pant University of
Agriculture and Technology in Mechanical Engineering and his master’s from
IISWBM - Kolkata in Business Administration Systems in 2000. Yu Liu of Changchun City, China has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2003-2004
academic year. Liu is in the doctoral degree program in Economics.
Liu received his bachelor’s degree in International Finance from the
Renmin University of China in 2001. Liu
received an Academic Excellence Scholarship award, the First Prize Winner at
Renmin University Speech Contest, Excellent Debater in Chinese National Debate
Competition, and the Excellent Broadcaster Award. Liliana Marie Loofbourow of Sacremento, California has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Loofbourow is in the Master's in Fine Arts degree
program in Creative Writing. Loofbourow
received her bachelor’s degree in Psychobiology, Creative Writing and Music
from the University of Southern California in 2002.
Loofbourow received a Trustee Scholar, Renanissance Scholarship Award,
Phi Beta Kappa Undergraduate Award, Award for Excellence in Undergraduate
Research, Psychobiology Program Outstanding Graduate 2002, Middleton Creative

receipent and Co-founded the literary magazine “Palaver.” Craig T. Meyer of Tulsa, Oklahoma has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Meyer is in the master's degree program in Geology.
Meyer received his bachelor’s degree in Geology from Rice University in
2002. Jonathan Newby of Huntsville, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Newby is in the master's degree program in Aerospace
Engineering. Newby received his
bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Auburn University in 2003. Michael Joseph Petrauskas of Grand Rapids, Michigan has
been chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of
Alabama for the 2003-2004 academic year. Petrauskas is in the master's degree
program in Banking and Finance. Petrauskas
received his bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science from Florida State
University in 2003. Joseph Bond Philips, IV of Birmingham, Alabama has been
chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2003-2004 academic year. Philips is in the master's degree program in
Business Administration. Philips

Chi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Tao Delta Honor Societies. Lance Holliman Poole of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Poole is in the masters degree program in Applied
Statistics. Poole received his
bachelor’s degree in Finance from UA in 2003.
Poole was a summa cum laude graduate, President of Alpha Tau Omega, Beta
Gamma Sigma, Mortar Baord, and Jason's. He
is one of a very few to graduate with a quantitative Finance major. Andrea Porter of Florence, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Porter is in the doctoral degree program in English.
Porter received her bachelor’s degree in 1996 at the University of
North Alabama in English and Psychology and her master’s from the Mississippi
State University in English in 1999. Porter
received the University of Alabama Graduate School Award of Excellence in
Teaching by a Doctoral Student 2003; Sarah L. Healy Endowed Scholarship 2002;
Alabama at Oxford Graduate Assistantship 2001; Zeta Tau Alpha Founders Grants
1997-2003. Porter presented papers
at The Sylvia Plath 70th Year Literary Symposium 2002; the Southern
Writer, Southern Writing 2002; South Atlantic Modern Language Association 2000;
Fifth Annual F. Scoot Fitzgerald Conference in Nice, France; and Alabama Writers
Symposium 2000. John H. Ratliff of Milton, Florida has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Ratliff is in the doctoral degree program in History.
Ratliff received his bachelor’s degree in 1996 at The University of
West Florida in History and his master’s from UA in History in 2000.
Ratliff was a 2002 Frank Lawrence Owsley Memorial Scholar. Sarah Marie Ryan of Huntsville, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Ryan is in the doctoral degree program in Psychology.
Ryan received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from The University
of Tennessee - Knoxville in 2003.

Phi Kappa Phi. Wang Shaoyi of XinMen, China has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2003-2004
academic year. Shaoyi is in the master's degree program in Industrial
Engineering. Shaoyi received his
bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering from XinMen in 2001.
Shaoyi was a recipient of the "Excellent Undergraduate of XinMen
University" award in 2001. Shaun Michael Steele of Mobile, Alabama has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the

Dean’s List. Richard P. Swatloski of Suprise, Arizona has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Swatloski is in the doctoral degree program in
Chemistry. Swatloski received his
bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from UA in 2000.
Swatloski received The Outstanding Undergradute Research in 1997 and
1999, the Kenneth G. Hancock Award Scholarship for Green Chemistry, the National
Science Foundation Scholarship, and the Graduate Council Research and Creative
Activity Fellow at UA. Swatloski
was selected to attend the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science 53rd
Meeting and the National Science Foundation's and U. S. Department of Energy's
Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute on Green Chemistry. Jeffery Michael Szychowski of Toledo, Ohio has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Szychowski is in the doctoral degree program in Applied
Statistics. Szychowski received his
bachelor’s degree in 2000 at the Murray State University in Mathematics and
Spanish and his master’s from University of Kentucky in Statistics in 2002.
Szychowski graduated summa cum laude from Murray StateUniversity. Jennifer Ann Traywick of Clanton, Alabama has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2003-2004 academic year. Traywick is in the master's degree program in Business
Administration. Traywick received
her bachelor’s degree in Finance from UA in 2003.
Traywick received the Vulcan Scholar (top freshman academic recruit), and
the William A. Sanders award, and The Blackburn Institute Fellow.

historian. Daniel Wade of Cincinnati, Ohio has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2003-2004 academic year. Wade is in the master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering. Wade received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanicial Engineering from the University of Cinicinnati in 2003. Erol Wallace, Jr. of Mobile, Alabama has been chosen to
