Awarded

Jon Charles Acker, coordinator for student assessment; William Hughes, programmer analyst senior; and Dr. William R. Fendley, Jr., director, all of the Office of Institutional Research, were recently awarded the Southern Association for Institutional Research (SAIR) 2001 award for Best Paper for their work, entitled "Implementing a recursive retention assessment system for engineering programs." Winning authors will receive travel support from SAIR to attend the 2002 AIR Forum in Toronto, Canada. Winners will also receive an invitation from AIR to present their winning paper at the AIR Forum.

Dr. Sharon E. Beatty, Reese Phifer Fellow and professor of marketing, recently received the prestigious Distinguished Scholar Award from the Society for Marketing Advancement. Beatty was presented the award for "substantive and sustained scholarly contributions to marketing thought and practice."

Dr. J. Gordon Coleman, Jr., library and information studies, was the invited keynote speaker for the Alabama Library Association's Public Library Mini-Conference at the Homewood Public Library. His speech was entitled "Mirthful Management: You too can Laugh and be a Leader at Work."

Jean Foster Herron, program manager for distance education, recently received the Distinguished Non-Credit Award for her development of the "Alabama Community College Leadership Academy." The award was presented to Herron as part of the Association for Higher Education's annual meeting.

Dr. David H. Maxwell, staff physician at Russell Student Health Center, was recently re-certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice for 2001-2008. Requirements include maintaining 150 hours of Continuing Medical Education every three years and passing the national re-certification exam every sixth year.

Dr. Doru M. Stefanescu

Dr. Doru M. Stefanescu, University research professor of metallurgical and materials engineering, recently served as chairman of the International Organizing Committee for the International Conference on Solidification held in Bangalore, India. He was a member of the International Advisory Committee and a session chair at the first International Materials Symposium in Coimbra, Portugal. Stefanescu was also the conference chairman of the Science of Casting and Solidification conference in Brasov, Romania. After the conference, he was awarded an honorary degree by the University Transilvania, Brasov.

Dr. Annabel Stephens, library and information studies, was recently named this year's recipient of the Alabama Library Association's Humanitarian Award. She has helped establish a fund for scholarships for Alabama librarians.

Appointed/Elected

Dr. Dennis L. Peck, sociology, was appointed to another term as associate editor of Sociological Spectrum, the official journal of the Mid-South Sociological Association. Peck was also appointed to an associated editor position for the forthcoming The Handbook of Thantology, to be published in 2003 by Sage Publication.

Dr. William D. Samson

Dr. William D. Samson, Roddy-Garner professor of accounting, was recently elected president of the Academy of Accounting Historians for 2002. Formed in 1973, the Academy objectives are to encourage research, publication, teaching and personal interchanges in all phases of accounting history and its interrelation with business and economic history. It has 800 members representing more than 34 countries.

Dr. Steve Thoma, human development and family studies, recently assumed presidency of the Association for Moral Education.

Dr. Dennis L. Peck, sociology, recently edited Extraordinary Behavior: A Case Study Approach to Understanding Social Problems, 2001, Praeger Publishers.

... Also edited the second volume of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Criminology and Deviant Behavior, 2001, Brunner-Routledge/Taylor and Francis Publishers.

... Also edited a thematic issue of Sociological Inquiry, the international journal of Alpha Kappa Delta, called The Sociology of Civility, to be published in 2002.

 

Dr. Paul Stuart, social work, has been named co-editor of the first Encyclopedia of Social Work History, to be published by Sage Publishing.

Gerald R. Webster, geography, recently edited a series of six essays on the 2000 presidential election in the journal Political Geography, including "The U. S. presidential election and the Bush v. Gore supreme court decision," Political Geography, Vol. 21(1): 99-104.

This work includes over 4,000 citations to juvenile history justice literature from such fields as law, sociology, psychology, education, social work, medicine and other sources.
