The publications listed below are good sources of information on grant and fellowship support for graduate education, and should be consulted before you resort to borrowing money to finance your education.
 
Alabama Foundation Directory, Birmingham Public Library, 2100 Park PI., Birmingham, AL 35203. This reference book provides a list of 283 Alabama foundations and is an excellent reference book for individuals seeking local support (available in the UA Health Sciences Library: AS 911 A31980).

Annual Register of Grant Support: A Directory of Funding Sources l993-94 (updated annually), 23rd edition, National Register Publishing, 1988; 3004 Glenview Rd., Wilmette, IL 60091. A comprehensive guide to grants and awards from government agencies, foundations, and business and professional organizations (available in the UA Main Library Reference Room: REF AS 911).

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, compiled by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. For sale by Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. Published annually, this catalog contains information on 989 assistance programs administered by 51 federal agencies. As the basic reference source for federal programs, the catalog's primary purpose is to assist users in identifying programs that meet specific objectives. If the name of a certain federal program escapes you, the catalog will help you track it down. Telephone numbers and addresses of program personnel are provided, as well as each program's objectives, eligibility requirements, criteria for selecting proposals, and regulations/guidelines (available in the UA Office of Sponsored Programs).

The Complete Grants Sourcebook for Higher Education, American Council on Education, 1 Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C. 20036. This reference book provides information on private and federal funding sources for research, developmental programs, and other projects. The book also discusses proposal development and provides helpful hints on how to seek and win grant support. Funding sources are listed by type, by area of interest, and by state and region (available in the UA Office of Sponsored Programs).

Corporate Foundation Profiles, 5th edition, Foundation Center, 888 Seventh Ave., New York, NY 10106, 1988. It is an in-depth, analytical profile of 234 of the largest company-sponsored foundations in the United States. Brief descriptions of all 701 company-sponsored foundations are included. There is an index of subjects, types of support, and geographical locations.

Directory of Research Grants, Oryx Press, 2214 North Central Ave., Suite 103, Phoenix, AZ 85004-1483. This volume cites more than 3,000 grant programs, arranged by subject. Both federal and private foundations, associations, and organizations are covered. Information includes a description of each program, dead line dates, and proposal restrictions. Subject indexes are alphabetized; simply look up a particular area of interest to find out about available grants (available in the UA Office of Sponsored Programs).

Encyclopedia of Associations, Deborah M. Burek, ed., Gale Research, Inc., Detroit, New York, and London. A guide to over 30,000 national and international organizations of all types, some of which may sponsor scholarships (available in the UA Main Library Reference Room : REF HS 17 .G32).
