Housing and Residential Communities offers approximately 16 graduate assistantships, which provide the following:
- Full tuition coverage for nine hours of enrollment, regardless of in-state or out-of-state status
- A rent-free apartment space on campus, typically within the area in which the GA works.
- A monthly stipend of $418/mo for 1 st year GAs and $442/mo for 2 nd year and beyond GAs, paid for 10-months August 1 – May 31
- Eligibility for a meal plan upgrade if the GA chooses to purchase a meal plan through Bama Dining.
The requirements to be a GA within HRC are as follows:
- Must be fully admitted to a degree-seeking program and enrolled full-time in a graduate program at The University of Alabama
- Must have and maintain a 2.65 cumulative GPA during the term of employment
- Must live on-campus in a provided space
- Must be able to work 20 hours per week as an employee of the University, including some nights and weekend work
- Start date of August 1
The Preferred Qualifications to be a GA within HRC include:
- Previous work experience in a residential setting
- Enrolled in a related course of study, including but not limited to: Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, Communications, or Business
- Flexibility in work schedule and tasks
Typical tasks undertaken by our GA staff include:
- Providing functional supervision of programming efforts for up to 28 Resident Advisors
- Assisting in the advisorship of a student organization, The Hall Council
- Providing administrative support to the Community Director for an assigned living area
- Assisting with the implementation and adjudication of the Community Living Standards within a residence hall
- Managing budgetary responsibilities for programming efforts within a living area

5.5 Student Health Center
Psychology Trainee. Performs duties with supervision of licensed psychologist on the Counseling Center staff. Duties may include individual, couple and group counseling; interpretation of psychological tests, clinical record keeping, case management meetings, outreach activities and limited crisis intervention. 5.6 Student Recreation Center
Sports Clubs Graduate Assistant. Responsible for administration, supervision, coordination and promotion of the club sports program. More than 10 sports are currently offered.
Marketing/Promotions Graduate Assistant. Assists with developing, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan for University Recreation.
Intramural Sports Graduate Assistant. Responsible for comprehensive IM program (officials, scheduling, payroll) with more than 45 team and individual activities. Assists with program development and implementation.
Student Personnel/Recreation Graduate Assistant. Trains, supervises and evaluates student support staff in the Student Recreation Center. Provides student professional development. Conducts personal training for clients.
Fitness Graduate Assistant (Academic Field Experience). Trains, supervise and evaluates undergraduate students enrolled in the human performance studies field experience class.
Fitness/Group Exercise Graduate Assistant. Assists with hiring, scheduling, supervising, training and evaluating more than 25 group exercise and aerobic instructors.
Aquatic Center/Riverside Pool Graduate Assistant. Teach LT, WSI and first aid course. Assist with swim lessons and management of indoor and outdoor aquatic facility. Require LGI and WSI

5.7 Women’s Resource Center
Graduate Assistant. Serves as assistant to the center in such areas as research, publicity, programming and fundraising. The center provides outreach, services and advocacy to empower women and to encourage their full, active and equal participation in the University and community.
Part-Time Temporary Instructorships. A number of part-time temporary instructors (PTIs) teach at the University each year. Qualified graduate students interested in becoming PTIs should contact the academic departments for information on availability of positions and teacher qualifications. Keep in mind that the departments that offer these teaching positions do not always restrict the positions to their own graduate students.
Sponsored Scholarships and Grants. A number of departments and divisions at the University of Alabama offer special financial aid to graduate students. Contact individual academic departments for further information.

5.8 Miscellaneous
Alabama Space Grant Consortium. Graduate fellowships are awarded to students pursuing studies in fields related to space (the physical, natural, and biological sciences; engineering; communication; law; international affairs; and public administration). Awards bring up to $22,000 per year, and they are renewable for up to three years. Only U.S. citizens are eligible. Council of Presidents Student Research Grant Program. Designed to encourage graduate and undergraduate students in all academic disciplines to better educate themselves through research activities. Applicants must submit a proposal, a letter of support from a faculty member in the project field of study, and an estimated budget. National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC). The NPSC gives fellowships renewable for up to 6 years in the following doctoral programs: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and related engineering fields. The total estimated value of this fellowship is up to $200,000, depending on the cost of the university attended by the NPSC fellow. National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program. The NSF, and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, awards graduate research fellowships to support study in science, mathematics, and engineering. Each three-year fellowship provides a stipend of $16,800 for 12-month tenure, and a cost of education allowance of $10,500 per tenure year. Fellowships are awarded on the basis of merit.
