| 1. Introduction The pursuit of a graduate education can be a financial burden for many students. However, funds are available to the enterprising student determined to explore every available avenue for financial aid. The application process for funds can be tedious, and information on funding sources is often difficult to find. For these reasons, the Graduate School of The University of Alabama has prepared this handbook on financial aid. Many kinds of financial assistance are available at the graduate level. Some of these resources, however, are restricted to students in certain disciplines or target groups. A financial award may give preference to entering graduate students, but students already enrolled in the Graduate School are eligible to apply for most grants and scholarships, as well as federally supported financial aid. The following are the basic types of financial assistance:

graduate study, investigate all sources of funding and apply for all
types of assistance for which you may be eligible. A summary of
